Here’s how we did it.
After interviewing over 100 business owners to validate the problem we had found, we started building the MVP in January 24.
We worked very close with our clients to understand what they needed to be able to solve their problem.
We didn’t make the mistake of building something without validating it first.
We also didn’t hire several developers that would cost hundreds of thousands of euros building an MVP in 6–12 months.
Building With Speed and Focus
Instead, we used Bubble, a low-code platform, to build our MVP.
Our office was like a little garage. One room, dysfunctional air-con, no windows, but three tables and chairs and long days figuring out how to get Aybee up and running.
By mid March we had a working MVP.
In April we started the first test with our first client who was keen to try the product.
As we continued talking to more and more brands, we realized how many companies had the exact same pain point—but no solution for it.
Charging From Day One
A crucial learning from other founders was: Charge your clients right from the start.
We managed to charge for each test right from the start. This was the only way to ensure that clients would actually take money into their hands and pay for our solution.
A huge milestone and validation for what we were building and important for bootstrapping our company.
Pro tip: We offered a money-back guarantee to reduce the risk for our clients willing to try something new. This worked extremely well and was also the strategy that helped us win our first 17 clients last year.
We never had to pay back any money. Instead, we gained clients who were heavily invested and provided us with highly detailed feedback to improve the product and insights delivered.
Our First Accelerator: Frankfurt School Entrepreneurship Centre
After the first three months in Cape Town, we joined our first accelerator in April—Frankfurt School Entrepreneurship Centre, led by 🏄🏻♂️ Ram Shoham.
This was the best choice we could make.
We applied and got accepted.
We moved to Frankfurt, got a new office without any costs, and gained access to 50+ mentors whom we met over the period of four months while working from Frankfurt.
For us it was huge to get direct feedback from so many experts that were challenging everything we were doing.
Experts with 30+ years of experience.
During this period, we managed to:
- build a great product,
- win Maximilian Bornschein as a new founding member who helped us with the entire data analytics part,
- improve our business model, and
- win several clients.
What’s Next: Demo Day
The grande final was the Demo Day. I will share more about this in my next post.
Key Learnings
The most important learning for us was:
- Start building your software/MVP with low-code to be cheap, fast, and iterate quickly.
- Charge clients immediately so they are involved and have high expectations.
- Start working with accelerators. Gain from network effects, low operational costs, and even prize money and visibility through Demo Day's.
